Who can register

A price tells you what a name costs; it does not tell you whether the registry will sell it to you. 81 of the 1,808 TLDs ds knows are not open to everyone — the registry asks for residency, a local company, a trade licence or an accreditation first. 27 rules cover all 81 of them, because sub-zones inherit: .com.au is .au's rule. Each one below lists the TLDs it applies to, and every TLD links to its own page, where the same rule is printed beside that registry's prices and lookup servers.

How to read these

  • Availability and eligibility are different questions, and ds answers the first. A domain reported AVAILABLE under one of these TLDs means the label is free, not that you may have it — so ds prints the rule beside the name rather than filtering the TLD out. See Where to register.
  • The registry's page, not this one, is the authority. These notes are hand-maintained — no registry publishes its rules in a form a program can read — so each one carries the page it was taken from and was last checked on 2026-09-02. They say what kind of gate exists rather than the exact legal test, because the wording changes more often than the fact of a gate does.
  • A TLD missing from this list is not thereby open. The list covers the restricted TLDs a registrar is likely to offer you; it is not exhaustive. Where no rule is on file, ds says nothing about eligibility rather than promising there is none.
  • Sub-zones inherit, longest suffix first. A rule written against .au also governs .com.au and .net.au, which is why 27 rules cover 81 TLDs. Each rule heading is the TLD the rule is written against; the chips under it are every zone it reaches.
  • Prices on the chips are the same figures the table carries — 26 of the 81 restricted TLDs are priced in the bundled table, and 26 have at least one registrar whose published price list proves it sells them. See TLDs & prices for renewals and which registrar is cheapest.

Closed to everyone

A separate 368 zones take no outside registrations at all: brand TLDs like .aws and .google, whose operator is the only permitted registrant, plus .arpa and the names reserved by RFC. They have no eligibility rule because there is nobody to be eligible — ds reports them PRIVATE rather than AVAILABLE and leaves them out of --tld all. See Brand and reserved TLDs, or filter the table to private zones.
